A network for new and aspiring library professionals
As many of our members will already know, we take evaluation forms seriously at NLPN towers (not least because it gives us a chance to get together and reflect over coffee and cake….) If the evaluation forms for #NLPNSummer are anything to go by, our decision to put members front and centre of the event was very well received.
As the aim of our network is to enable our collective development, we were very keen to provide an opportunity to members who are at an early stage of their career to present on a topic of their choice, either to gain presenting experience or share knowledge with the network. Over the course of six events, we’ve learnt so much from the established professionals who’ve shared their expertise with us, but equally we were very conscious that there are many who, relatively speaking, are new to the profession, who have already begun to make their mark and have great insight and advice to offer.
This was certainly proven last Saturday. Evelyn, Nicola & Helen, and Emily added a fantastic new dynamic to our event. Overwhelmingly, those who attended commented that the new professional presenting experience was a welcome addition; this unique opportunity delivered by NLPN was seen as a supportive way for new professionals to broaden their experience which is not offered elsewhere. Many commented specifically that this had been a great idea, and that they particularly enjoyed hearing about projects and initiatives new professionals had been involved in:
This addition has reminded us of the benefits of trying something new; we’re really pleased that this initiative was received so positively and that our members were inspired by the work of their peers. New professional involvement is definitely something we’ll endeavour to incorporate into our future events.
We were also very pleased that 80% of attendees rated their overall impressions of the event as excellent. Other recommendations in the feedback forms included events which focused on other sectors, including special libraries. We’re pleased to announce that our next event will be in conjunction with the Portico Library and the Association of Independent Libraries. As always we’ll strive to offer practical advice to our members who are interested in this sector.
Our massive thanks again to all of our speakers at #nlpnsummer for their hard work and inspiration, as well as their presentations that had such an galvanising impact on those who attended : )
