A network for new and aspiring library professionals
Hello and thank you for all the support you have given the network over the last four years! For those who don’t know how we came to be, we set up our network after listening to Ned Potter speak at the CILIP New Professionals’ Day in 2012. Our thoughts were that there wasn’t much in the way of CPD opportunities in the North of England and acting on Ned’s advice we built our own brand (initially under the guise of ManchesterNLPN).
So what have we done in 4 years?
We’ve organised and hosted 9 free CPD events (with our 10th event being held next month!) covering a range of topics including information literacy, MOOCs, interviews & many more! Thank you to all the brilliant speakers who have spoke at our events, we and the attendees (as attested to by feedback forms) really appreciate it and have found the experiences shared to be very beneficial! We’d also like to thank all those who have provided sponsorship, which has allowed to ensure our events to remain free. Lastly, we’d like to thank all of you who have attended our events or joined in using the event hashtags.
We’ve had 12 new professionals present at our events.
We’ve built this blog: which includes a list of useful resources we have curated (please let us know if you think of something we can add to it!), interviews from our members providing career advice, write-ups of events (including our own), top tips and much more. We’re always looking for people to contribute so feel free to get in touch with us if you want to blog for us or if you want us to cover a topic.
So for those of you who like numbers here is what our figures looks like:
Top 5 areas of the blog over the past 4 years are^:
Home page / Archives
Top Tips: ‘Mastering’ your MA/MSc Dissertation
The NLPN team
In addition to the blog we have other social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn (we did have a Google+ page and Pinterest account but found they weren’t necessary).
We’ve been invited to speak at events/conferences:
We delivered a Teachmeet at the LILAC conference in 2014.
We delivered a webinar for LILAC 2016, offering tips to ensure delegates maximised their time at the conference and got the most out of sessions and networking.
We wrote a book review.
We’ve written an article looking at the use of social media networks for CPD purposes – thanks to those who contributed to the surveys we will let you know when it is ready to view!
This year we’ve been lucky enough to have our hard work rewarded by UKeiG in the form of the Early Career Award (we will be posting images of the trophy when we collect it in July). Thanks to UKeiG for this award and also to Gil Young, Emily Hopkins, Lisa Jeskins and Katie Nicholas for supporting our nomination.
What’s to come? More of the same plus we’re going to be launching our Fact Sheets soon, which will be short posts that offer a basic summary and a selection of useful resources on a given topic.
